Rumor: Microsoft Working with AMD to Develop ARM Processor for Laptops

Microsoft - AMD ARM processor rumor

According to a tweet from Leakster FrontTron and a post on Clien, a South Korean tech forum, Microsoft is said to have partnered with AMD to develop an ARM processor for an upcoming laptop using a Cortex-X1 core.

However, there was no mention of which exact core configuration will be used. But given that it is an SoC for a laptop, the two companies can splurge on the power budget which allows them to use multiple Cortex-X1 cores. It is uncertain though if it will have the traditional mix of big core and little core design.

It is believed to use a mRDNA2 GPU but is said to have 8 Cus and perform on par with a desktop-grade NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050.

Samsung is also said to be involved in the mix but it could be limited to designing the chip which will be fabricated on the TSMC 5nm node.

FrontTron mentions that the SoC will not be exclusive to Microsoft hardware and could show up on other ARM-powered notebooks.
