Microsoft recently announced layoffs for 1,900 employees in its gaming division. This comes following the company’s USD 69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft Gaming Workforce Layoffs
The announcement was made by Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, to the gaming team. In his announcement, he emphasized the company’s commitment to providing full support like severance benefits to those impacted.
According to the memo, the reduction of the gaming workforce was lessened by 1,900 roles out of a total of 22,000 people.
Spencer noted that the integration of the teams from Activision, Blizzard, and King into the company required the company to reassess the priorities and eliminate overlapping roles and areas.
Despite this though, the gaming division of Microsoft has recently showcased titles like MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Ninja Theory’s Hellblade 2, and Oxide Games’ Ara: History Untold.
The gaming industry as a whole has seen job cuts in 2023 and carrying over to the new year with Riot Games recently announcing layoffs.
