Bluetooth 6 Announced with Better Tracking Precision and Security

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has just announced the release of Bluetooth 6, its latest Bluetooth standard. This standard improves precision tracking and offers better security. It also focuses on improving filtering and efficiency to lessen the demands on device battery life.

The biggest update to the new Bluetooth 6 is a feature dubbed Channel Sounding, which according to the Bluetooth SIG, can determine the distance between two devices with “centimeter-level accuracy”.

It does so by using phase-based ranging to send radio signals between two devices at different frequencies. This allows the new technology to calculate the distance between them.

The new feature can soon be incorporated with “Find My Devices” for more precise location tracking for companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung.

Moreover, it should help address security concerns with the use of digital keys by assuring that it only unlocks within a specific range.

As of writing this, it’s uncertain when Bluetooth 6.0 will make a debut in devices. We’ll just have to wait and see when companies will include the new Bluetooth standard in their devices.
