Semiconductor Advancement Promises Faster, Cooler, and Greener Smartphones

A groundbreaking semiconductor discovery by UCLA scientists could revolutionize consumer electronics, leading to smartphones and laptops that are significantly faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly.

Semiconductor Breakthrough From UCLA

Published on July 28, 2025, the research focuses on “spintronics,” a novel approach that utilizes the magnetic properties of electrons for information processing. Traditional chips generate heat and waste energy. The UCLA team has overcome a major hurdle in spintronics by developing a method to create highly magnetic semiconductors.

They achieved this by stacking atom-thin layers of semiconductors with magnetic atoms, boosting magnetic concentration to an unprecedented 50%, ten times higher than previously possible. This innovative technique has already yielded over 20 new materials and is being patented.

Improved magnetic semiconductors could reduce energy and water consumption in AI data centers and quantum computers, bringing smaller, more powerful, and sustainable devices closer to practical application. While commercial products are a few years away, this breakthrough holds immense potential.
