Intel has just announced that Qualcomm and Amazon will be the first customers in the Intel Foundry Services business.

Qualcomm will source its chipsets from Intel on its 20A process that uses RibbonFET transistor architecture and is said to have improved power management. The new node is scheduled to make its debut in 2024. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Web Services division will rely on Intel’s new IFS packaging solution but what exact chipset has yet to be revealed.

Making chipsets and packaging solutions for third-party companies signals a shift in Intel’s business plan. It also solidifies the company’s plans to catch up and retake the top spot by 2025.

It also announced a roadmap for its processors including a new naming scheme for its nodes. This all begins with the upcoming 12th generation Alder Lake processor set to be announced later this year.

Intel new node naming

Numbers will be used in favor of the industry-standard nanometer node naming. The next-generation 10nm in-house processor will be called Intel 7, which is said to offer 10-15% performance gain.

The chipset based on the 7nm node will be called Intel 4 and is expected to debut in 2023. This will be based on EUV lithography and promises 20% more performance than its predecessor.
