MediaTek Pentonic 2000 launch

MediaTek has just released the MediaTek Pentonic 2000, its latest flagship TV chipset. This comes after the company unveiled the new smartphone SoC – the Dimensity 9000, the first 4nm chipset.

The Pentonic 2000 is the first TV chipset that’s built on the TSMC 7nm node. It is also the first commercial TV chipset to support Versatile Video Coding (VVC) for H.266 content. The new codec offers improved compression efficiency for streaming and broadcasting media. In addition, the new TV SoC supports HEVC, VP9, and VS3 codecs.

The chipset also supports up to 8K resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate with support for MEMC. Meanwhile, thanks to AI technology, it can also upscale non-8K video to the maximum resolution of the TV.

As far as connectivity goes, it supports Wi-Fi 6E and also 5G but the latter is optional. There’s also support for UFS 3.1 storage.

The company mentioned that the first TVs with the MediaTek Pentonic 2000 are expected arrive in 2022.
