YouTube has just announced that it will start hiding the dislike counts on all videos across its platform. This comes after the platform started experimenting with hiding dislike counts on videos earlier this year to help reduce dislike attacks.
They did clarify though that the button won’t be removed entirely, so you can still dislike videos but only to tune your recommendation. Instead, only the creator can see the dislike count via the YouTube Studio.
The move was done because it wanted “to create an inclusive and respectful environment where creators have the opportunity to succeed and feel safe to express themselves.”
The counter was believed to be a good gauge of whether a video was worth watching but the research of the platform says otherwise. It mentioned that it didn’t find any noticeable difference in viewership whether the dislike count was seen or not.
According to YouTube, this is just one of many steps to protect creators from harassment and that it will continue to invest.
