For the past 15 years, Apple has supported the fight against HIV-AIDS and with the help of its customers has raised almost 270 million dollars through purchased PRODUCT(RED) devices.

The first appearance of the PRODUCT(RED) line of devices was the 2006 Special Edition iPod nano. Part of the profits from the sales was donated to organizations that support the fight against AIDS that affect women and children.

In a statement by the company to mark World AIDS Day, it said, “Since 2006, Apple customers have helped raise nearly 270 million dollars to fund prevention, testing, and counseling services for people impacted by HIV/AIDS. Apple-supported grants have enabled care and support services for over 11 million people, provided over 192 million HIV tests, and allowed over 13.8 million people access to life-saving antiretroviral treatments. In 2020 alone, Apple’s support for (RED) helped prevent over 145,000 HIV-positive mothers from passing the virus on to their babies.”

In addition, the company said it will now redirect some of the funds to lessen the impact of COVID 19 on the fight against aids. From December 1 to December  6, 2021, the company will donate 1 dollar to the Global Fund for every purchase made with Apple Pay on its website, at an Apple store, or via the Apple store app.

Lastly, starting December 1 customers can download six new (RED) faces for the Apple watch. Topics about the fight against HIV/AIDS will also be featured in Apple Books, Music, Podcasts, and the Apple TV app.

Stores around the world will also change their logos to red to mark this event.
