Design

If you put them side by side, the vivo Y22s shares a similar design with the vivo Y35, except for the finish on its rear panel, which resembles a peacock showing its beautiful feathers. Depending on how you look at the device, you’ll notice that it has a shade of both yellow and cyan, which looks great.

It shares the same camera housing design as the Y35, along with the vivo branding on the lower left. Power button/fingerprint scanner and volume rocker on the right, Triple SIM tray up top.

Like the Y35, there is also a headphone jack, along with the USB-C port, speaker grille, and microphone at the bottom.

vivo Y22s has a slightly smaller 6.55-inch display and with HD+ resolution. It’s a step down from the Full HD plus screen on the Y35, but it’s still decent for watching videos. To be fair, you do get 90Hz refresh rate for smooth and fluid animations when scrolling through the home screen and menus.

Performance

The vivo Y22s is powered by the Snapdragon 680, along with 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It’s a very common package that you’ll find in several mid-rangers today.

Performance-wise, it’s more than enough for typical day-to-day tasks, and depending on what you play, it can also deliver a decent gaming experience. Mobile Legends, for example runs well on High Framerate + Ultra graphics quality, and Call of Duty Mobile will run on either Very High Graphics + Medium Framerate or you can also go for High Framerate + Low Graphics.

Like the Y35, this also pack vivo’s own enhancements like Multi-Turbo 5.5 and Ultra Game Mode, which all contribute to smoother and more stable performance. You also get up to 8GB of Extended RAM.

Camera

At the back of the vivo Y22s is a 50MP main camera alongside a 2MP macro shooter. Not exactly the best combo in my opinion, as I still prefer an ultra-wide to a macro or depth sensor, but maybe it costs more to do that, so, it is what it is. So far, sample shots show plenty of detail when lit properly and decent dynamic range.

Battery

vivo Y22s packs a 5,000mAh battery with 18W Fast Charging, which according to vivo’s claim, means 70% in 70 minutes. Not the fastest we’ve seen in this category, but not bad either.

Initial Verdict

With a price tag of PHP 10,999 for the 4GB+128GB version and PHP 12,999 for the 8GB+128GB variant, the vivo Y22s offers some of the niceties that the more premium Y35 has with a few compromises – specifically, the lower resolution display, the lack of a depth sensor, and the slower charging speed.

For the first one, you’ll probably be able to tell the difference, but honestly, it did not bother me at all. This phone’s screen is still decent for media consumption and gaming. As for the third item, if you really want to save as much time charging, then maybe you should go for the Y35.

Bottom line is, if you’re looking for a phone with decent performance and cameras, with potentially great battery life as well, this is easily one for the list.
