Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista recently disclosed that the agency is tapping the National Printing Office (NPO) to help hasten the release of driver’s license cards.
DOTr – NPO Driver’s License Cards Agreement
Bautista revealed to The Philippine Star, that under the deal, the NPO will produce an initial five million plastic driver’s license cards for the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and deliver within 60 days.
After meeting Bautista last week, NPO Director Carlos Bathan received the terms of reference (TOR) and he revealed that the final proposal will be submitted this week.
This comes after LTO chief Jose Arturo Tugade revealed that the agency will run out of plastic cards by the end of April because of a delayed procurement. As a result of the shortage, the agency released temporary paper driver’s licenses to renewing drivers.
Transport groups are split on the government-to-government, according to The Philippine Star report. Some groups would prefer a bidding process still to ensure transparency. While other groups are satisfied with the decision to avoid paper driver’s licenses.
