Last week, a report from the Assistant General Manager of the Manila International Airport (MIAA) Bryan Co announced that on May 17 the Philippine airspace will be shut down for 6 hours but has now been cut down to 2 hours (2 AM to 4 AM local time)
Philippine Airspace Shutdown on May 17
The previously planned 6-hour Philippine airspace shutdown on May 17 to replace the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines’ (CAAP) air traffic management system’s (ATMS) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit has been reduced to 2 hours.
CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio said that they have already secured an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit and have finished its repairs. They have also hired the French firm Thales Group to provide third-party maintenance services.
As a reminder, the suspension of air traffic management system operations would impact several flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Clark International Airport (CRK), and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), as well as other commercially operated airports managed by CAAP (a total of 42).
