Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, its latest premium mobile chipset with Kryo CPU cores and the Adreno 825 GPU.
Snapdragon 8s Gen 4
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is the successor to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and is equipped with an older Kryo core rather than the Oryon core used in the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. The 8s Gen 4 is also built on the TSMC N4P 4nm process.
The cores of the new chipset are as follows:
- 1 x Cortex-X4 prime core running up to 3.2 GHz
- 3x Cortex-A720 cores at 3.0 GHz
- 2x Cortex-A720 cores at 2.8 GHz
- 2x Cortex-A720 cores at 2.0 GHz
It may not have the new Oryon core, but it does differ from its predecessors by not having any little cores, which could offer better multi-core performance.
The company claims that you can expect a 31% improvement in CPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, but it didn’t mention if this is to multi-core or single-core performance.
The new chip also features a new Adreno 825 that is said to deliver up to 49% better graphical performance than the third-generation S chip. The Adreno 825 also offers on-device ray tracing support and Snapdragon Elite Gaming features like Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2.0 and Adreno Image Motion Engine 2.0.
The GPU supports up to QHD+ or WQHD+ displays at a 144Hz refresh rate.
The Qualcomm Hexagon NPU has also been updated to offer 44% better performance with on-device AI tasks. Meanwhile, the 18-bit triple image signal processor (ISP) allows for up to 320MP camera sensors and supports 4K video at 30fps.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 also brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and Extended Personal Area Network (XPAN) connectivity support. The latter allows you to use compatible wireless earbuds via Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth. Additionally, the chip brings a 5G modem with peak download speeds of 4.2 Gbps but only supports sub-6GHz rather than the faster mmWave frequency bands.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is expected to power the iQOO Z10 Turbo later this month. Xiaomi, OPPO, and Meizu are just some brands that are said to be working on a smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4.
