Google Rolls Out Stable Gemini 2.5 Models, Introduces New “Flash-Lite”

Google has announced significant updates to its Gemini AI models, moving both 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash to stable, generally available versions. Additionally, the tech giant is introducing a new, even faster and more cost-efficient model called 2.5 Flash-Lite, currently in preview.

The new version, 2.5 Flash-Lite, is designed for high-throughput tasks like classification and summarization, prioritizing speed and cost-effectiveness. While “thinking” (reasoning through thoughts before responding) is off by default for Flash-Lite, it can be dynamically controlled via an API parameter.

For the stable 2.5 Flash, Google has updated its pricing, with a slight increase in input cost but a more substantial reduction in output cost, aiming to make it more economical for users.

Developers still have a grace period to transition from the preview versions of 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash before their deprecation dates in June and July 2025, respectively.
