The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy said in an interview that around 95% to 96% of SIM card owners are now registered.
“As of May 10, 95 million na po, magna-96 million. I expect mga 100 million more or less, so mga 95% to 96% na tayo,” DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said in an interview with Dobol B TV.
DICT – SIM Card Registration
The department extended the SIM card registration period for another 90 days after only 60% of the 168 million active SIM cards were registered nearing the original April 26, 2023 deadline.
Last month, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) revealed that it isn’t aiming for 100% registration. NTC Deputy Commissioner Jon Paolo Salvahan clarified that in other countries with SIM card registration, the average percentage of registered subscribers was just 70%.
The DICT also revealed that it will introduce Project: SIM Check Mo, a way to check if the SIM card that’s contacting you is registered and has a good track record.
The 90-day extension period will end on July 25, 2023. After this, all SIM cards that aren’t registered will be deactivated.
