PLDT to Deploy Google Taara Laser Technology for Enhanced Connectivity

PLDT plans to deploy three Google Taara laser communication sites to provide “fiber-like” internet service, particularly in remote and underserved areas. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by offering high-speed connectivity without the challenges and high costs associated with laying physical fiber optic cables.

According to PLDT Chief Operating Officer Menardo G. Jimenez, Jr., the technology is a “game-changer” for connecting hard-to-reach locations. The initial sites will be installed on Talim Island, Rizal; in Dipaluda, Isabela; and in Bagong Pagasa, Quezon City.

The Taara technology, developed by Google, uses beams of light to transmit data, similar to fiber optics but without the need for cables. Each site is capable of delivering speeds of up to 20 gigabits per second.

Moreover, this system will bypass logistical hurdles such as underwater cable installation and difficult terrain like rivers and mountains, making it a more efficient solution for expanding network coverage.

The announcement comes as PLDT also revealed a separate subscription agreement for additional shares in Kayana Solutions, Inc., a data-powered digital experience company.
